Its been a week of alignment and gridlines. I walked pass the conference room today with someone teaching Revit!!!!!
The programme will definitely save lots of time but will probably take an equal amount of time to get everyone adjusted to it. Image the number of people it might put jobless……

Guess what I saw on a number 14 bus on my way to work yesterday. A SDE advert. It’s the first time I saw it. The words Scholl of Design and Environment has never appeared so big in front of me except on the building itself perhaps. Some of my seniors face were on that double decker bus with the courses offered by the rest of the faculty. With the Singapore University of Technology and Design, I guess, they feel the need to hem up the publicity. I think they need a marking team. Guerilla style. Something chic and clever.
Here are some thoughts:
1) Open studio. We should load our portfolio of projects for all to see and comment hence an online magazine will do the trick. Not only will this encourage the students to do a good job and to present it properly, it will also increase the exposure for the school and students.
2) Community service. It always feel good the give. In this case, we should be helping others with our skills in small projects. These must be real projects and student will learn how to deal with clients and eventually reap the rewards of satisfaction upon completion.
3) A new building. As BIG said, the building can be your marketing tool.
4) Host compeitions not only those related to design but random ones like fastest burger eater or smthg. To create buzz u need to make pple curious and interested. Plus its just fun to watch!

Someone left today. It’s quite odd, as we congratulate him and wish him well for leaving the company, that it seems like a long time coming. Anyways it s a step in the right direction!
Couple of us went to the movies yesterday to see Chow Yun fat in the government funded film Confucius. It is not a movie of epic proportions compared to most of its fellow Chinese movies instead it is pretty dramatic. Not recommended for those with a lower capacity for the second language ( you will have to make sure your eyes catches the subtitles).The night ended with dinner although half the table haven’t the appetite due to the extra sugary pop-corn (note to eng wah). Not to mention a certain growing-someone ate 1 and ¾ pack of that sinful stuff. This was all before I was summoned to a late meeting at railway mall. The guys had been working hard so please lend them your support!

Someone rewrote my portfolio. Part of the reason why thou is so slow in application is the amount of vetting it goes through. Still, I hope it’s enough. The ministry of education decided to increase the payable education fees by PRs and foreigners, my mum told me she’s glad I’m almost done with my education. Well, almost. Is now the time to be Singaporean? Maybe if they offer free prata and more quality scandals than jack neo la. Hurhurhur.

Master Yoda said “ With great power comes great responsibility*”. Did we miss the * ? I’m sure somewhere in fine print it writes: Not applicable to architects. Sure we carry huge responsibility but power? Not quite so. Lawyers can tell you it’s against the law. Doctors can threaten you with your life and architects, well, we can say “ the building will collapse !” wait isn’t that the engineers line? Hee. Still my hat goes out to all aspiring ones. Mostly, I think we are misunderstood or misrepresented.

O btw have you heard about a new recruitment drive, besides the one happening around here, The Elf Club. Working hours are to be arranged with respective thesis-ers. Do helpout! Can’t wait to see everyone around with their penknifes, Uhu and bizarre behaviours in the wee hours.

After more than a week of hk and macau...probably abit too much egg tarts...i came bk to singapore with a tummy ache. Thank goodness with the "courtesy upgrade" to business class, my journey was A OK while my bf happily drank Champagne, red wine with a 3 course dinner whilst enjoying the wider longer seat of course.

Sorry for not blogging often. I mearnt too. But sometimes i'm just too tired. I had to pack jus hours before the trip to hk.

Hk is becoming like a routine. The places to eat, shop and hang out. And once in a while try new places a things. Which we definitely did this trip. More so actually is the gathering of friends, something in the weather or in the cantonese, we laugh we relax. bless

Macau is all abt the buildings. Some are so out of this world the sight of it will make u laugh and think you are in a movie. Seriously? they spend money on this? It all about the interiors. Which encapsulates you in a different world from the outside. The fine texture is worth exploring though.

of worries and worry nots

theres always something comforting abt the end of the year. Mb its the anticipation of an holiday or the year is coming to an end signifying a new beginning….of sorts, or the fact that there are plenty of public holidays ard the corner.

Life as a designer in a corporate world is brain- numbing.

It takes the fun out of designing and alas, the most important, the ‘play’ out of the process. But still certain things I’ve learnt to deal with and a many certain things i’ve learnt to draw. Under a you-should-just start-your-own-firm-la team leader whose looks will mislead you to believe that he’s not as senior as he is, you learn from his patience but sometimes hopes he can be a bit less bounded by restrictions, clients and money. He has so much more to offer. Amidst a resignation, a cramp desk space and the enormous amount of paper (which I will recycle as wrapping paper..hehe), I still wake up every morning, hopeful.

The end of the year signifies another thing: application. Education. The fear and the uncertainty. The what if’s and what if nots. Although it does feel like a breath of fresh air coupled with a sigh of relief.

It never did occur to me that graduation could be a big event. But I guess they are right to say that the decisions you make within this few years will change your life. As I stood behind the red line, Erwin gave me his signature grin. I felt a little embarrassed. Although I did not graduate with flying colours I see the joy in my parents, whom they themselves never completed high school, throughout the day. They really wanted this day to happen. Alas I didn’t disappoint. I started to miss everyone.

Maybe I’m a bit too predictable; in my adolescent years if I have been capricious I would have been given two tight slaps, hence I became more cautious. I wonder if I would have been a more creative person if not for my upbringing. Maybe I would have taken the road less travelled. Wait. Architecture is a road less travelled by most people.

As Auntie Nat puts it “... you are shy you know….” Yeah I guess.

I think everyone is at least remotely interested in architecture at a certain point in their lives. What if the point of time happens right after ur A levels. Den you go on and choose Architecture as ur course of study? Oddly i feel like taking a marketing/advertising course. Not much of a reason , just a sudden urge i guess. hehe

Windows open and closes. Everything will not happen at a perfect moment. But its ok! I'm not sure what i got myself into with this decision. But time will tell. I had to make some sacrifices for my long-term personal development i guess.

i dunno whether is disappointment of the project, discouragement frm the crit or saddness that its the last semester and it will almost be the last time i will see my dear friends that i have spent 4 years with. A tennis ball is a ball designed for the sport of tennis approximately 6.7 cm (2.7 in.) in diameter and is yellow or light green in color. After a tennis wacking session at Thomas's place we had dinner and yet another ranting session. Not to mention a cockroach scare with me squashing yanghan and dawn standing on the bench. Do u knoe that according to treehugger.com the tennis ball are actually recycled in japan. They attach the balls to the bottom of tables and chairs in classrooms. Apparently this reduces wear and tear on floors, whilst it also “drastically reduces extraneous noise, creating a better learning atmosphere.” Especially so for children with hearing aids who are sensitive to sudden loud noise or background interference. Maybe we shd all place a ball as the sole of our shoes especially the girls' heels.

Nick sent me the URA scholarship email. Of which i might have clicked the delete button with a blink of an eye. Now i take a second look at it. Somehow in this bleak economic outlook, i reckon i could give this email a browse. How? Can u guys picture Jia at URA? I promise to stay funky... :)

Its so odd that after 4 years in NUS i feel as if i have learnt nothing. I mean how many of us can truely draw a detail?..Jon..Pek...a handful i think. We have become so jaded that we complain tt the year one are so noisy, they spoil the laser machine ( part of which is true la ) , we present our project while sleepwalking. Sigh, wat have become of us.

Yes it is true i still fear some tutors. WHy? Perhaps this way i'm more motivated to produce work otherwise i thinkn i wun bother. Fear is the only driver...perhaps.

Jia will be at LuLu again frm next wk as Auntie Nat needs help. At the looks of it, it will be a long wat till i actually start ( or di o really want to ) on an architecture related job.Haha.

Studio for sem2
Less den half of us turned up to listen to wat the tutors hav to say. Not like they missed much anyways. Hee Limin started first, kinda insulted us thinking that we cant read. She wrote a brief that is 3 pages long with reference somemore. Great work but nah...dun think i want her. Den there is Joseph, shux read his brief ( which btw is the most convincing one ) and said his this sem brief is more challenging that next sem's industrial housing. Bobby...o bobby, unprepared and clueless. Tan Teck Kiam..sounds like his studio is doing his company's work for him...pretty commerical. Richard wasnt there neither was TKS.( note TKS's brief : the lack of capital latters after fullstops..haha)

UD assignment is such a chore. Joe told us to focus " architectural students cannot spend their whole life completing assignment". And the worst thing, our RM 2000 ( research methodology 2000 words ) is due the same day as studio submission! The RM tutor is not extending the dateline folks! Mb we shd strike.

Anyways, as an effort to clear my thoughts on wat to say 2morow..here i present jia's project...

( apologies for the lack in nice graphic, language and design)

Rethinking the facade, came up with a system that reacts with heat tt caused a kinetic movement. In the beginning e process involved origami folding in exploration of how movement could be achieved. This study resulted in one fold that was most appropriate.

As my main concern is sunlight i seek to exploit the potential in this surface that shrink and enlarges, creates different depth in layers, to respond to the climatic conditions........
